[강의] 'What do you live for?' @ KookMin Univ. College of Business Administration

by Doer Ahn 2009. 5. 14.

May 14th @ 13:00 in KookMin Univ. UIT room. Questions for the life long purpose and ways to search a true answer to the eternal destination had been thrown by me, Doer Y. Ahn on behalf of leadership driven KookMin Univ.'s student council members.

In search of a motor for action of each and every single persons who attended lecture, I started an open call by posing a question, 'What makes the difference between the quality of people's lives?' Logically and socially we are doomed to demonstrate some degree of difference between in our abilities in many areas. But what's overwhelming as a socially acknowledged judgement standard, is nothing but grades in numbers, and going further, amount of money one makes. So everyone wants better grades, and more money, vertically. Without being armed with one's own belief and goal. Those I say dreaming someone else's dream.

Science of achievement tells a lot of stories to us. It's about how we can achieve more effectively and efficiently. Even within my own blogsphere we can have a look on these takes. But what truly shapes person's ability to contribute to do something beyond themselves wouldn't be those logical drives. I believe in internal drive which I call Emotion. Human Emotion.

Desire for contribution and appreciation stay with us, I believe unbearably so. Then what is it? What is it that shapes us? Why do we sometimes fail or even not reluctant to challenge? Or even not accustomed to setting a goal itself? People say because they have no money, no family support, no social system, no followers, no cars whatever. Those, however, are not defining factors. The defining factor, as far as I believe, is emotion - courage, resolve, vision, passion.

It's up to us to change our emotion especially when it comes to a question of 'What to focus on from NOW?' It's natural that one can suffer and struggle hard to get an answer to this question. But that can surely be supported by other series of questions, 'What's the meaning in it? What means to me? What do I believe? What belief makes me heart beating and be passionate?' When one recognizes what really is for their ownselves to these questions, then it is time to move. Take Action. It's your time now.

History of our world is a set of beatiful decisions. Google genius' decision to sell their technology, Obama's decision to be a president of U.S. and now passed away, JuYoung Jeong's decision to award a contract for shipbuilding, et cetera. Decision shapes our destiny and even history. What to focus on. What one believes in. And according to that, what to act for.

My recent decision to quit one of the finest companies in the world is based on those fundamental questions. And let me finish this by leaving some notes from attendee's takes on what they want to focus on from today and for the rest of their lives.

One. I am finding a job now even though I know it is not my life long top priority. But as far as I know, getting a job maybe one of possible and optimized ways to find my real way.

Two. I want to focus on how I could be happy and what makes me happy.

Three. I want to be realistic. My father have juggled a small business for a long period of time and I witnessed great ups and downs not only from my father but also for my family's destiny. So I still want to focus on getting a job for safer life.

Four. Achieving a goal thrills me. It hasn't been matter whether those goals set by someone else or by myself. I am goal oriented guy. But until now goals around me have been passive, I can realize it now and it's improper way to handle the matter. I will try to focus on setting an active goal from now on.

Five. My previous life in middle & high school has been full stack of tedious and repetitive works. From now on, in Univ., I will live my own life.

Six. I believe each person live for one's own dream. Dreaming is a great thing. But still, I am not sure how I need to go through with my life for realizing my own dream. I will focus on the search for 'What' I want to seriously dream of.
